There are basically two systems under which one may apply:

THE FEDERAL SYSTEM

[Selection administered by Immigration Canada]

  1. Skilled Workers: Applicants are selected on the basis of credits given for age, education, work experience, language ability, relatives in Canada and ability to establish themselves in Canada.

  2. Entrepreneurs: Businessmen who need to have a net worth of $300,000, establish a business in Canada and must meet a number of business requirements. Processing is slow, 36-48 months, depending on the visa office of application.

  3. Self-Employed: Mostly limited to farmers, professional athletes, well known artists and performers.  Processing is slow, 36-48 months, depending on the visa office of application.

  4. Federal Investors: Must meet a number of business requirements, including net worth and management experience. Processing is faster and is mostly completed in about 18 months.  Federal investors can settle anywhere in Canada. For more detailed information, please click here.

  5. Family Class: Reunion of wives and husbands, parents, grandparents and children by sponsorship. Processing is mostly done in less than 12 months.

THE PROVINCIAL NOMINEES

[Selection administered by the provinces]

Many of Canada's provincial governments have instituted provincial programs under which they may nominate and select applicants for admission to Canada. The Federal Immigration Department then issues the visas after background and medical checks.

  1. Entrepreneurs: British Columbia, Manitoba, Saskatchewan and New Brunswick each have its own requirements, but all require a business to be established in 2 to 3 years permanent residence visa available in about 1 year.

  2. Quebec Investor: The Provinces of Quebec allows an interview in Montreal in 3 to 5 months and a permanent visa in 14 to 16 months.  For more detailed information, please click here.
